Choosing the right cherry picker vehicle

When you buy an cherry picker platform from VERSALIFT, we'll ensure you get the right cherry picker for the job!  Our experts will help and guide you through the whole decision making process.  Here are some key vehicle considerations:

Van or Truck?
Choosing the right vehicleThis is the first and most fundamental consideration when choosing a vehicle.  A van's key advantage is a secure and covered load bay area which acts as a mobile workshop.

Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
Up to 3.5 tonnes (3500kg) is non-HGV, anyone with a car license can drive and an operator license is not required.
3.5 - 7.5 tonnes can be driven by drivers who passed their car test prior to 2000.
Over 7.5 tonnes HGV license required.

Wheelbase
Having a longer wheelbase gives more space but can effect payload.  Bigger vehicles can be a problem in congested towns or cities.

Payload
The spare payload capacity on VERSALIFT data sheets details how much equipment and materials can be safely transported in the vehicle.

Choosing the cherry picker's boom & platform

VERSALIFT will offer expert advice to guide you in making the right cherry picker's platform choice for your application!  Here are some key points to consider when using the VERSALIFT data charts:

• The Safe Working Load (SWL) of the cherry picker platform must never be exceeded - it includes all personnel and equipment.  A 'standard' person's weight is set at 80kg.
• Maximum working height is defined as cherry picker platform floor height plus 2 metres.  The vehicle type chosen can effect height.
• Maximum horizontal outreach is taken as 0.5m beyond the front of the cherry picker platform.  Measurement is usually taken from the centreline of rotation.

Typical Boom Configurations:

Flyboom (jib) - Considerably enhances versatility, especially in conjunction with telescopic boom.
Telescopic - This is preferred for ease/speed of operation (point-and-go). No tailswing.
Reverse-Articulated - Old fashioned and limited in outreach control.
Articulated - Limited in use and must be used with care on roads. Most suited to very small open vehicles.
